We intended to provide a forum for current literary luminaries to not only be recognised, but also to make history and revolution in the world of literature. Book Review Hybrids: Clash of The Elementals By Prisha Dixit
When life presents unimagined circumstances and unpredictable situations, the undiscovered side of a human personality comes to light. This could be for both the positive and the negative, but as it is considered that untold circumstances bring untold reactions. “Hybrids: Clash of The Elementals” by Prisha Dixit is one such book in this regard. As interesting as the title is, the book does indeed present a plot which rich with hybridity and depicts a unique story altogether. The blurb of the book is enough to get a reader hooked on it. It is interesting to see how the author uses a few words but builds up an entire universe that both suffices the imagination of the readers and excites it at the same time. The readers would notice the author using the term “annoying twin sister” and understand its significance because it is so relatable in a sibling relationship. This is from where the readers develop a connection with the book. As a result of this, the readers give all their attention from the beginning to the very last pages of the book. The plot is woven in a fascinating and intriguing manner at the same time. It is full of suspense, mystery, plot twists, and anticipation of what is going to happen next. At the same time, the mystery behind the unpredictable nature of life and how it can change the situation into something else permanently lurk in the background. This makes the book all the more relatable and gives it the necessary humanitarian touch. “Hybrids: Clash of The Elementals” is one such book that would give a unique kind of experience to all readers after they have completed it. Dixit writes a book that is vast and massive in its content and yet concentrated in terms of the book-length. At the same time, the readers would find a lot to gain from this book; it would give them a sneak peek into a lot of different things, things that belong to the fantasy world, a journey into the untold world, a journey of self-discovery and simultaneously, discovering the strength of human bonds. Towards Chapter 4, the readers may be reminded of Percy Jackson and how they had to fight off the monster before entering Camp Half-Blood. There are many mythological elements that the author uses in the book. The readers observe and admire the bond between the twins. Battling against all odds and displaying a united front, the author shows the bond in beauty, purity, and it’s not being tainted by the evil ways of the world and at times entertaining too, especially with Jackson and Selene in the picture. While the novel is serious and hovers between life and death in the novel, there is also a hint of comedy and entertainment in the other level. So, there is no space to be bored with this one. Another unique feature of “Hybrids” is the technique that Dixit uses in writing the book. She hands over the narrative to the central characters, and they speak for themselves. They become the showrunners of their lives, and the author abstains from pulling strings. This helps them appear more individualistic and true to life. Since they speak to the readers directly, the lines between a reader and character are blurred, and hence the readers feel closer to them as a person. The plot is constructed in a manner where the story is quite consuming, unfolds at a fast pace, and keeps the readers hooked throughout. Through the narrative technique, characters, and the plot, the author introduces her writing to the readers, and they would be left hoping for more. Although there are many things in this book, the author has woven them in such a way where they blend in and make the book a great read. There is a little bit of everything in this book. Mystery, suspense, excitement, fear, worry, being united by blood are just a few things among the bunch that the author packs up the book with. Also, The writing style of the author is very clear and straightforward. It can be understood by anyone out there and can be very well perceived. She uses a language that can be understood by readers of all age groups, and hence the book can be read by all readers, irrespective of their ages. The chapters are short, crisp, and leave the readers in suspense and wonder. This adds up and enhances the theme of suspense and reinforces the excitement in the readers. Overall, the book can be read by all those who are looking for some refreshing and new content for reading and also those who want to have an experience of the new worlds which are shaped by the unpredictable changes in life. In the aesthetic sense, it is also said that the heart feels emotions and yet, its capacity to bear the whole body and ensure life in it is a thing of both beauty and wonder. The book also talks about seed capital, fundraising, pitch deck, product-market fit, go-to-market plan, business plan, where to find investors, bridge round, EBITDA, Business model calculation – but no were in-depth details about the concept. It is not often that I read a book where I learn something valuable on every page. Avinash explains in down to earth terms the rise and fall path of mistakes and what type of mind set you need to turn them into fantastic learning experiences that make you a better person. They describe in detail what it took mentally and emotionally to overcome and transform their inner landscape via understanding their failures. I thought this would be a quick read but I was wrong. I took me almost two weeks to read it. It took so long because I needed to digest what I was reading and then self reflect. Avinash does not suggest I do this, I took it upon myself and I am grateful I did it.The benefits are amazing. Don’t be afraid to fail. In fact, failures often lead to success. Take inspiration from the failures, all of these failures were followed by perseverance and enormous successes. Stories in the book, too, offers important lessons one can relate with. Some of them are politics that play out in office every day or how insecurities drive people to act in a certain manner. Everyone would face or are bound to face such hurdles in an office atmosphere. Many of the characters in the stories show courage and deal with those situations with dignity, and mostly succeed. This book shows how it’s not just hard work and talent that determine entrepreneurial success. An unfair advantage is something unique and internal to each person that gives a competitive upper hard, and exists even without having worked for it. Even adversity can be converted into an opportunity, as the frameworks and examples in this book show. The authors’ framework for entrepreneurs goes by the acronym MILES: money, intelligence/insight, location/luck, education/expertise, and status. This book would inspire you to retain a certain amount of goodness in you while you aim for or occupy the corner office. That is the most important message of this book. It doesn’t pretend to tell you how to get there or be there. Avinash’s work is a great reminder that the rules for running a strong business and creating value haven’t changed. For one thing, there’s an essential human factor in every business endeavor. It doesn’t matter if you have a perfect product, production plan, and marketing pitch; you’ll still need the right people to lead and implement those plans. A literary work of writing becomes strongly relatable when it is born from experiences that touch the heart and lives of the many who live through it or even those who know about. Life and fate play games that can be understood by less, but the effects can be felt by all. “The Khan of Khel Khudai” by Harshaa Bharatula is one such book where life and its unpredictability find an accurate mention and also explore the reasons and happenings in the lives of the characters, simultaneously keeping the political flavor in the backdrop. Set in the lands of Afghanistan and the action swinging between the United Kingdom and Afghan homes as the book progresses, “The Khan of Khel Khudai” has the air of Afghan environment and a close portrayal of life, as it happens there. In light of this, the book becomes both exciting and has the necessary touches of reality which a reader of the foreign or native land would find gripping and fascinating. As the author begins unraveling the plot of the novel, there a sequential development of the lives of the two characters where fate pulls the strings of their lives, and both take an individual course of action. At the same time, the Afghan lands and the political instability and the ripple effects of it find a direct or indirect mention at different stages. While the book remains open to a psychological study of the central characters, it also opens up for examination from a political and sociological standpoint. At the same time, as the action shifts to London time and again, the book shows how events operate on a foreign land far away from home. Although “The Khan of Khel Khudai” is written in a fictional framework, the fact that it is based on events happening, in reality, gives the book the necessary artistic strokes to make it appear true to life. Bharatula creates this in the fiction format, which excites the readers’ imagination and also helps them connect it all with the characters. Alongside, the author gives glimpses into Afghan culture, their lifestyles, social customs and explores the themes of brotherhood, family life, relationships, and the fragments of a life on foreign land. This makes the reading experience diverse, and the readers are able to have their imaginative journey to the land of Afghanistan and feel the life that exists there. Bharatula, in his “The Khan oof Khel Khudai” constructs characters who are a product of both their circumstances and the choices they make in their lives. The book shows the development of their lives in a chronological manner where their lives unfold effortlessly and yet, in an unpredictable manner. He also shows how the political forces hold the fate of all, whether it is the vulnerability of the bureaucracy or the question of the state of common man, the impact and hold of religion; all find mention in the book. Alongside, the book also shows the impacts on the youth who are guided into different directions where they hold their own version of the truth and constructive work. He creates characters who speak for themselves, make their own decisions, and choose their destiny by freeing themselves from the pen of the author. Due to both the subject content and the characters., the book would catch the interest of the readers in no time. At the same time, it would also ensure that they would have a reading experience that may be born from fiction, but the resultant effect is their updated knowledge and awareness about the prevailing situation in Afghanistan. In light of this, recommending this book to all readers may not be wrong. While younger readers would find this book interesting from the fantasy point of view, the grown-up readers would be able to interpret “The Khan of Khel Khudai” from the viewpoint of mature and aware readers. At the same time, some may also find their knowledge being updated or refreshed with new facts about life and how it happens. Written at a time when there is a political change in the land of Afghanistan, “The Khan of Khel Khudai” becomes more important and no less than a record of the present time. Readers of the future would find this book useful in studying the life and fate of the common man of Afghanistan and the situations he faced when there was political turmoil and a situation which was no less than unrest. It would not only give them an idea about the present-day circumstances but would also help them in reaching the roots and understand as to how it would all have conspired. Therefore, recommending this book to not just Indian readers but also the readers of foreign lands would help in opening the eyes of many towards the unspoken truth and hearing the other side of the story. Book Review : Time Machine and my ten residences by Vijay Kumar Soni
Wonderful work by Author Vijay Kumar Soni (VK). The book is based on the concept of Time Traveling and Time Machine. The story is an amusing one and takes you through the life of VK. To the comparatively younger readers, it may come out as a ludicrous world of high spirit from the bygone eras in the life of Indians. This story is not less than a mix of wit, whimsy and comic banter. In the 1960s – the era in which this journey begins – Indian lifestyle was quite simple. So, it starts with the commuting by tongas, includes luxuries of air travel in th 1980s and merry misadventures of everyday life in the 1990s, through the tech innovations that altered life till the 2000s, up to Indians finding their global presence in 2020. Author VK has properly talked of the Time Machine in terms of flight path and passengers. The machine takes breaks while moving from one destination to the other. He has put his destinations in the form of his past 10 residences in life. He has described his memories related to each residence in the form of short and crisp, sub-titled paragraphs. Written in a reader-friendly language with utter simplicity, the story comes across as a relatable memoir for most Indian readers. What makes it different from the usual writings these days, is that it could have been written in a serious tone but isn’t. Nostalgia is generally supposed to make people emotional. Rarely does a nostalgic text, or any such object for that matter, makes people smile. But here we have VK’s time travel that does. The idea of going down the memeory lane struck the author’s mind during a lockdown period in year 2020. Given the waves of pandemic all around and forced to stay indoors, he decided to sit and watch a movie called Project Papa. In this movie, the daughter worries that her Papa is getting Alzheimer’s and may progressively soon forget everything including her. VK felt the same concern about himself. And in order to avoid falling prey to the issue, he opened the lid of his own time machine and attempted to go back through almost 70 years of his life till then. It wasn’t as simple of him, as it may appear. Disjointed and unrelated thoughts flooded his heart and head. As he describes, to him it felt as if someone stores files randomly without a proper structured filing system and then tries to locate an old file. This is how memories work. Often incorporating new items of the present moment, and old memories get re-stored with all these changes, but without a file recording these changes. This is why we all have some false but mostly true memories.
Anindita Das’s Latest Interview After the Success of Her Debut Book ‘What The Pandemic Learned From Me’
What do the world’s most loved furniture brand, the nation’s highest selling mobiles and the highest on-time airlines in the country have in common? They have all borrowed words from Anindita. Better known as Annie in the advertising circuits, she has also lent voice to hospitals, leading dailies, automobiles, fashion brands, FM channels, gender sensitive social causes alike. Her work has earned her several prestigious awards and accolades in creativity and effectiveness. An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Delhi, she grew up with a love for story telling in the green city of Guwahati. This is her first attempt to write something without a client’s approval. She also giddily warns her readers that this isn’t going to be her last either. Akhila Saroha: I would like to begin by congratulating you on the publication of “What The Pandemic Learned From Me.” How has the response to the book been so far? Anindita Das: The response has been warm so far, but I am hoping it’s going to pick up more in the coming days. Within two days of launch, it got a top best seller rank in the humor and self-help categories of Amazon. It has also been consistently ranking in the Top 5 Hot Releases. Messages and mentions have been pouring in from many readers and bloggers letting me know that they could relate to it and they seem to have had a few good laughs. Akhila Saroha: What led to the idea of writing “What The Pandemic Learned From Me”? Were there any events that inspired the work? Anindita Das: Let’s just consider this – we have all given two years of our life so far to the pandemic. While for some people this has been an extremely productive phase, I felt in my case, it wasn’t so. The feeling of being stuck alone in a house, grappling with all-encompassing grief, and scrolling endless bad news on social media pushed me to do something positive. I took to writing so I could process my feelings. That’s how the idea of turning it into a book and maybe help people to anchor themselves to some positive experiences or at least derive some form of momentary entertainment during the lockdown came into being. Akhila Saroha: How easy or difficult was it for you to write on a subject that held relevance for all and also remain objective about them despite being personal at the same time in “What The Pandemic Learned From Me”? Anindita Das: I almost gave up on publishing when the second wave peaked, because though we all knew it would happen, nothing had prepared us for the intensity of it. It often felt crippling to keep up with the nonstop cheerful tonality of the book considering what people in the country were experiencing and I, myself was feeling. I was often riddled by doubts if my view was too frivolous and myopic, and I had to constantly work on reminding myself why this made sense not just for me but for other people also. It made sense to dig into something light and happy after many months of just doom and despair. It’s what our soul needed. Akhila Saroha: What are your views about present-day writing? Do you think it does complete justice in depicting human nature in the light of “What The Pandemic Learned from Me”? Anindita Das: I wouldn’t presume to comment on the state of present-day writing. I realize in recent times quite a few lockdown diaries have come out, though I personally haven’t read any of them. From what I have seen of the book blurbs, I do feel my book handles the topic in a completely different light. It’s a mix of humorous anecdotes, insightful observations and a hint of satire. It’s a peek into our collective experiences and our lockdown lives. Akhila Saroha: “What The Pandemic Learned From Me” shows the uniqueness of your style of writing. Are there any authors that you enjoy reading or any books which are your favorites? Anindita Das: It’s embarrassing but I have been in a bit of reading slump. But this year, I have read a few books that I quite enjoyed. I have a special soft corner for historical fiction – The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Pachinko by Min Lee and The Forest of Enchantments by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni are the ones I have read recently. I am also fond of books by Phillipa Gregory and Indu Sundesaran. Akhila Saroha: How would you categorize “What The Pandemic Learned From Me” as its appeal seems to be to a broad audience? Anindita Das: This is a good question, because while this is a book in humor genre, it is also about the huge array of experiences we didn’t plan for, thanks to the pandemic. At some point, we all tried our hands in reviving an old hobby that we had to let go off or latch onto a completely new form of distraction for the sake of our sanity. Simply, because of that it is relatable to a vast number of readers but especially to girls who might be spending the lockdown days alone. I was surprised when the book became a best seller in the self-help category and not just in the humor category on Amazon. Akhila Saroha: “What The Pandemic Learned From Me” has given a powerful introduction to your potential as a writer. Can the readers expect more from you in the future? Please share about your future projects. Anindita Das: I do intend to write something more in the future, a young adult romance perhaps. But the idea is really at a very nascent stage right now. Then there’s also the writing that I do as an advertising creative, hopefully there will be some good campaigns coming out soon.
