The team extends its warmest congratulations to Annem Saad, a talented seventeen-year-old writer whose story “In the Eye of Error” appears in the science-fiction anthology Machines, Meteorites and More.
At an age when many young people are only beginning to discover their creative interests, Annem has already started transforming curiosity, observation and imagination into meaningful storytelling. A Class 12 student at TSMS Noida who lives in New Delhi, Annem represents an exciting generation of young writers unafraid to engage with some of the most important questions of our time.
Science fiction has played an important role in shaping Annem’s creative outlook. Frank Herbert’s Dune, one of Annem’s favourite books, demonstrated how the genre can go far beyond futuristic settings and technology. Science fiction can become a way of examining people, power, responsibility and choice.
That idea can be clearly seen in “In the Eye of Error.”
The story follows Sera, an engineer aboard a highly automated, AI-controlled ship where human intervention has become almost unnecessary. The technology appears capable of managing everything—until a violent storm overwhelms the automated systems.
Suddenly, a forgotten manual helm becomes the ship’s only hope.
What begins as a technological crisis therefore becomes a deeply human question: What happens when the systems we depend upon can no longer make the decisions for us?
Through this compelling premise, Annem explores the relationship between automation and human judgement. The story reflects on dependence, responsibility and the importance of retaining human capability even in environments designed to eliminate the need for human intervention.
This makes “In the Eye of Error” especially relevant to a generation growing up alongside rapidly advancing artificial intelligence.
Annem’s interest in characters searching for meaning and connection within systems that seem too large to change also gives the writing an emotional dimension. Rather than treating technology merely as spectacle, the story places a person at the centre of the technological conflict.

Machines, Meteorites and More brings together stories by eighteen young writers from the Scholastic Writers Academy. Created through an advanced writing programme under the mentorship of author Rahul Saini, the anthology invites its contributors to imagine new technologies, extraordinary circumstances and possible futures while examining how scientific change might affect human lives.
For Annem, participation in such an anthology marks an important step in a much larger writing journey.
