Sometimes, one lifetime is enough to show the different phases of time and impact the personality of a person into an entirely different and unique person. The fact that a person is a product of the circumstances holds true when one reads “Niyatinati- the ultimate justice of Karma” by Aruna Shaibya. Through her story, the author shows the different phases of a person’s life and all that goes into the making of his personality on the whole. It also takes the readers into the different points of time in the protagonist’s life where there are sad times and happy times and times that make them wonder about the untold stories that exist in society and the life of a person. It also raises several issues of power, honesty, the corrupt nature of people, and the innocent being a victim in a major case. In that sense, the novel rises from being a simple story and becomes a writing for a social cause. “Niyatinati” has an interesting title that bears impressions throughout the story. Even though the readers can understand its meaning, its relevance at different levels makes sense when they read the story till the end. In one word, the title sums up the whole idea of the novel and yet does not spill the beans explicitly. This is the beauty of it. It is only later when the readers start exploring the book in depth and understand the happenings in the light of being a design of destiny that they experience the hold of destiny in people’s lives and its relevance on the whole. Although the effects of Niyatinati silently resonate in the book, they make their mark in the later phases of the novel when the protagonist resolves to finish the unfinished business of his father. It is here that the powerplay of destiny makes absolute sense. When Shaibya’s novel begins, the readers are taken into a happy world where everything seems perfect and more of a dream life. Things begin in an ideal world where everything seems perfect and falls into place like the natural course of life. “Niyatinati” takes the readers into a world that has talented college students with big dreams and hopes to achieve the heights of success based on their educational experience backed up by support from their families. This reflects in their behavior as well as their conduct among themselves and their peers. In the midst of this, they equally experience the highs and lows of life, only to understand who is there for them and who is not, thus resulting in the filtering of the right people. Thereafter, when the plot is constructed, the author gives it a twist that would not have been anticipated by the readers anytime in the plot. While this twist shows the characters, it leaves the readers lost in equal shock and wonder about how unpredictable life can be and how one moment is enough to change a person’s life, their share of responsibilities as well as the fact that life’s goodies may not always last for long. This holds true in the context of the plot of “Niyatinati.” The author shows how destiny pulls the strings of people’s lives and how everything that happens for a reason also has a fundamental purpose in determining the meaning of the life of any person. On observing “Niyatinati” closely, the readers also notice numerous themes and questions of relevance that the author covers in the novel. These range from personal to social issues and issues of universal relevance. Dheeraj’s troubles to adapt to different societal requirements, Vivek’s family’s short-lived happy days, his father’s and sister’s fate, and the fate of many girls like his sister, which is shown through Mrigi later and the contributing characters who also show a different side of life through them all address the different themes of ‘Niyatinati.” In this sense, “Niyatinati” has a wider significance on a universal level due to covering different issues at the same time. It also raises the serious issue of the innocent being prey to cunning and corrupt individuals who make the lives of others miserable in order to fill their treasury. While this issue disturbs the readers, it also opens their eyes to the unspoken reality and the stories of many who do not find mention anywhere and mostly die the same way. Hence, “Niyatinati” also becomes a novel for a social cause. Since it is available in both Hindi and English, it is likely to attract a larger reader base. This book is recommended to all readers who are interested in reading fiction and works that are of social relevance and hold a universal validity at the same time. It would also be enjoyed by people who are interested in reading books that evolve through the different phases of life and show the different sides of characters as life progresses and unfolds further.

Life Beyond Complications by author Vaidehi Taman is a coming of age story of a young boy and his serendipitous introduction to spirituality
Life beyond complications by author Vaidehi Taman is a coming of age story of a young boy and his serendipitous introduction to spirituality and spiritual practices of Hinduism through a chance meeting with the Shiv Sena Supremo Bala Saheb Thackeray. This is a work of non-fiction and a fresh, confessional, insightful view of a young boy’s journey from ignorance to a better understanding of himself and his spiritual senses. It is a tete-a-tete with Sadhguru Shri Riteshwar who was not born as his public persona but was a commoner unaware of his spiritual obligations and far from the quest to understanding his place in the universe and the beauty of the Creator. The book talks about his journey as a young boy from Jharkhand who became a student leader in undivided Bihar at the age of 20. He led the student wing called ABVP of a leading political party of India named BJP. As a leader of ABVP he was a karyakarta and a staunch believer and flag bearer of the ideals of the party which are deeply rooted in Hindutva. It was in the year 1993 that he came across a gathering in which Bala Sahed Thackeray was giving a speech enthusiastically which instilled in him the values that he was working on and he felt inspired by that speech to further the cause of Hindutva. This made him put his thoughts into action and he called for public prayers among the masses and started to conduct Maha arti. His immediate presence and influence at such a large scale rattled the ruling party and the then government asked for immediate actions to be taken against him which led to him being convicted in a false murder case. This shook his mother to the core and made her die of shock. This became a major turning point in his life which is also the major climax of this book. Prison is where he became closer to his spiritual self but did not lose touch with reality. He began to hear about the problems of prisoners in his jail and started to fight for their rights and their needs. This made others look up to him as a reformative revolutionary. In jail he continued with spreading the word of spirituality and brought about spiritual awakening among the prisoners through conducting prayer meets and satsang. After the four years in jail, he was transformed into a completely different person who became closer to his spiritual self and did not have any inclination to return to worldly life. This is the point that he became the Sadhguru that he is revered as now. This book is a sneak peek into the life of one such ordinary person who became extraordinary by firmly holding on to the light of faith that is within each individual but is realised by few. He is a believer of Shri Krishna and his word Shrimad Bhagwat Mahapuran only. He acknowledges that happiness and sorrows are temporary part of life but the real goal is to unite with the inner light within all people which is a part of the higher light. The realisation of this is the realisation of higher spirituality that will lead to spiritual awakening and overall betterment of life. The book is an inspiring read and one that instils hope in the reader that despite all the mistakes that people make, despite their ordinariness and all the worldly temptations, they can all transform themselves and unite with the goodness of the higher world setting their goals in place. Author Vaidehi’s writing style is simple, easy to follow with apt vocabulary and clear explanation of thoughts. There is no circumlocutory manner of noting anything. The language is formal and respectful of the topic at hand. All these incorporate the twist of fate that brings an honest soul towards its goal of becoming one with their real duties in this world and make them exemplary through their good deeds. It is this clear, straight forward manner of relaying the journey of Sadhguru Shri Riteshwar that makes for an interesting read. The book does not dictate anything to the reader but leaves the reader to absorb the core values that Sadhguru Shri Riteshwar’s life resonates so that the reader may whole heartedly and in an open minded manner deduce the morals and key takeways from his life. This is done so that they may imbibe these lessons in their own daily lives and bring about a lifestyle change. The goal of the book is clear. It is about showing people real living examples of how being at one with one’s inner light of faith and having their goals adjusted to causes that benefit humanity will eventually bring about betterment for themselves and those around them. Not once is Sadhguru Shri Riteshwar talked of in terms of someone who is out of this world. It is his journey from being ordinary to an extraordinary individual that makes his story so relatable and worth replicating. At around 80 pages, the book is a short read though it is deep and thought provoking. The book also has a lot of beautiful, colourful photos of high definition that makes for an engaging read. Internet: Then Vs Now by Vrunda Patel
Our beloved Internet has aged and How? Change is the only constant as we know and the constant obsession of this generation “The Internet” has aged and just like any other youth, it’s free from several restrictions. If you’re a tech enthu-cutlet, I’m sure you guessed it right until now that we’re talking about none other than “Web3” here. And if you’re hearing it for the first time, hold your seat because reading about it will open your perception about where the world is moving. But let’s start from the start. The Inception Web1 or the “infant web” to be better termed, was only a one-sided thing (just as ek tarfa pyar). No engagement, no interactions, nothing at all. Owing to its restrictions, it was termed as ‘Read only web’ wherein, one can only read, or say consume the content. But the question arises, then who the hell was creating the content? The answer to this is wealthy websites. The reason behind this is back then, the internet was not as convenient as it is now, and neither was the information accessibility. And hence, creating content was centralized amongst peers with money and information. In this sense, it’s safe to say that the internet and information used to be traded for money. This continued till 2004 and then a paradigm shift was about to happen. When things escalated Freedom follows with age and so happened with the internet. Consumers started growing quickly which demanded more and diversified content requirements. It was this time when our favorite platforms such as Youtube and Facebook came into the picture, which gave users the power to not only create but share the content across the platforms. This renamed the web as ‘Read-Write’ web. With this, the whole content creation as a business came to life. But things were good until now, then why this Web3, you may ask. And the answer to this is Centralisation and Monetisation. Privacy wasn’t a big deal until now, but now that these tech giants such as Meta and Google are misusing it for making millions of it, it has sparked curiosity amongst users for protecting it. These platforms work as an intermediary between the content ‘creator’ and ‘consumer’. But the thing to ponder upon is that these tech giants leverage the creator’s effort behind the content and the consumer’s time regarding consuming the content All these sudden privacy concerns sparked a need for “ownership” concerns. And Web3 made it possible. Web3 as a Messiah The Web which was once just an escape from the boring chores of people now holds the potential to provide a thousand-dollar career. The Creator economy surged due to an increase in internet accessibility and plenty of free time to cut during the lockdown. Hence, content took a huge leap of faith for creators. But creating something online remains on the platform, and if the platform itself gets wiped out just as in the case of ‘TikTok’ in India, what about the content? What about the efforts that go behind making a 30-second video? What about the million views it got? That goes in vain with the platform. Here’s when the ‘ownership’ becomes not just a necessity but a need for the creators. Web3 allows the users to not only create or consume but rather own the content too. In a way, users will have full control over their created piece of content instead of any centralized platform. The keyword attached to Web3 is “Decentralisation” which in clear words means freedom. This is achieved through communities called DAO (Decentralised Autonomous Organisations), open protocols, smart contracts, and blockchain networks. Well, these words might sound alien at the moment but it’s the future for sure. The relevance of Web3 is on the rise as its utility is outperforming the current scenarios. Hence, witnessing the lifecycle of the internet from Web1 to Web3, it evolved into being helpful but complex at the same time. From just consuming to now owning the content as an asset, the web has come a long way but the users need to keep pace with it to leverage it to the fullest. This calls for active involvement in Web3 space to know the basics and then get involved in it by joining communities and being a part of discussions. Early adaption is the secret to getting ahead in life and the world of Web3, now is the time to adapt. – Vrunda Patel
Author PJ Thobias Talks About His Book “On The Banks of Connolly Canal”
Tasnima Yasmin: Congratulations on the publication of your book “On The Banks of Connolly Canal”. We would like to know why did you choose the name Connolly Canal? PJ Thobias: Connolly Canal is a canal dug during the British Times by an enterprising British civil servant by name Henry Valentine Connolly to connect the many water ways on the west coast of Kerala to render navigation possible from the north to south of Kerala. The story takes place in the fictional village of Korattur on the banks of this canal where I happen to live now. Tasnima Yasmin: Are your characters based on real people? PJ Thobias: Not really. But I cannot entirely rule out some similarities with people who lived some decades back of whom I have heard of and have acquainted with. But such similarities are sometimes exaggerated or under played to make the book more readable and to knit the story together. It cannot be said that the characters are based on people who really lived in this part of the world, they are more like fictional characters. Tasnima Yasmin: From where do you draw the inspiration for your writing? PJ Thobias: My first book was written at the instance of my friends and children who seem to enjoy my conversations with them. These conversations often drew from my past experiences. The first book ‘Corporate Comedy’ is a satire describing the torturous journey of a young man through the corridors of Indian Public Sector Undertakings. I immensely enjoyed writing this book. Often it was like being transported into another world and, I must say, it lit up my retirement years. Coupled with my own experience and the feed backs I received, there was no reason not to attempt another book. Tasnima Yasmin: What made you want to write a book about rustic characters? PJ Thobias: All my childhood days I lived in a village and I had my school education in the village schools. It was after I entered corporate life, I moved into big cities and spent the better part of my life in the hustle and bustle of metros like Bombay and Delhi. But memories of my younger days in those serene and invigorating environs lingered on and I felt compelled to transfer my thoughts into a book Tasnima Yasmin: Do you think that the setting is another character of the text? PJ Thobias: Well. Connolly Canal meandered through the paddy fields of Korattur bearing in its depths the many untold stories of the folks who lived on its banks. The canal lends the story a sense of permanence and serenity. Tasnima Yasmin: How often do you write? PJ Thobias: I have written only two books. As I said before writing often lifts me to a state of ecstasy and I feel new windows opening in my mind looking over hitherto unseen vistas. I experience my retirement years being lit up by this activity. So, I don’t see any reason not to continue writing, granting God bless me with good health and a cheerful disposition. Tasnima Yasmin: Which contemporary Indian writers in English inspire you? PJ Thobias: Among the Indian authors writing in English, I particularly enjoy the writings of R.K.Narayan, especially his first novel (I am not sure) Swamy and his friends. Another author I follow is Arundhati Roy. I regularly read the books of Salman Rushdie. Tasnima Yasmin: What was the idea behind the book cover of this book? PJ Thobias: If you have read the book you would readily identify it as a scene where Cherry and his friends were having fun in the canal and Cherry standing on the railings of the foot bridge poised for a dive. Tasnima Yasmin: What are your upcoming books? PJ Thobias: Well, I have no idea at the moment. May be one of these days another idea will take possession of my mind and I will be inspired to write another book. Tasnima Yasmin: What is your favourite genre of literature? PJ Thobias: Satire is my forte. But I often shy off from satires for fear of readers probable indifference to my brand of fun.
On The Banks of Connolly Canal by PJ Thobias: Book Review
At a length of 247 pages, On The Banks of Connolly Canal by PJ Thobias is a book that leaves readers with the feeling that it has ended too quickly. Unputdownable, seamlessly knit with rustic images and heart touching, the book is a refreshing take on village life. While Korattur may be any village like other villages of rural India, but, this particular village seems special as the writer has romanticized and idealised the happenings of this village to bring forth the multi-faceted nature of life along the paddy fields of Korattur. The book is like a take on the lives of different individuals who are all residents of Korattur. This makes the book like a collection of short tales that enhance deeper understanding of Korattur and provide a perspective on each of the mentioned characters that adds to the significance of the locale and the genuineness and relatability of the reader with the content of the text. There is no doubt that the light heartedness of the book cover should not be considered as the be all and the end all because the stories within are not so simple. Rather, they discuss serious incidents and events that are marked by a tone of maturity which only someone who has a lot of life experience, an eye for detail and good observational skills can radiate. Apart from the content of the stories, it is the writing style that is the icing on the cake which serves to enhance the roundedness of these wholesome characters. They are not flat characters without any personality but are rather multi- faceted and have many sides to them that the reader will discover as the stories progress. This makes the book worthy of being devoured but at a moderate if not slow pace to gain full and proper understanding of the text. Both the male and the female characters have dimension if not too many sides to them and they are as much driven by their intellect and instinct as the fate that drives the course of the incidents that they end up facing. It is difficult to pinpoint any specific story but almost all the chapters bring with them a freshness that comes with a tinge of nostalgia for the rustic, the simple and the uncomplicated that the fast pace of a contemporary work life in the box apartments of the city fails to provide. If the characters are the icing on the cake, then the writing style is the cherry on the icing. Subtly evocative and true to the essence of the plots, the book is bound to make readers smile and teary eyed at the same time. This is because of the finesse with which the shots of the village life and scenes are captured that is neither exaggerated nor down played. Rather, there is a connection that flows seamlessly and makes for an enjoyable read. The choice of vocabulary is apt. The words provide proper understanding of the issues at hand, bring out the themes of the plots, create excitement, suspense and add a plethora of emotions that makes for a rich reading experience. This makes the book not only interesting but also informative. The multiple climactic scenes create a beautiful, seamless and rich aura of the characters that emphasises on the beauty of rustic characters and the art of beautiful characterisation. On the whole, the book is highly entertaining and a must read for readers who enjoy reading tales set in an Indian setting, lovers of fictional tales from Indian writing in English and readers who are fans of RK Narayanan though the tales and the writing style or characters do not bear any uncanny resemblance to Narayanan, yet it is the rusticity of the setting and the whole heartedness of expressions that immediately evokes the simplicity of RK Narayanan. The book is well edited and has a professional touch to it too. There are no errors, improper vocabulary or lengthy and trailing passages that may bore or confuse the reader. Rather, the book shares a good balance between explanation and description which provides room to the reader for interpreting and analysing that makes the reader involved in the plots though a lack of simple pencil sketches or line drawings and illustrations would have added to the joys of the reading process.
