All the poems of this collection were not shared by me in social media with the exception of one poem, which is dedicated to my father. In 2023, I began the process of compiling my unpublished poems into one file. I revisited the words written by me and enjoyed the journey. Author Rupali: In our daily lives, I find inspiration to write. For example, I enjoy 2 sports the most- Badminton and Cricket. Badminton, I love to play and Cricket, I love to watch. In the “sports and games” section, you can read 2 poems dedicated to these 2 sports. The forest fires of California inspired me to write the first poem of the book titled, “It is all just smoke and mirror”. The Rise Insight: You write in various poetic forms like the ghazal, Haiku, Haibun, Gwawdodyn. What draws you to these different forms and how do you decide which form to use for a particular poem? Author Rupali: Poetic forms offer a structured framework to the poem. As a poet, we have to follow the relevant rules of the poetic form like the number of words, number of lines, stanzas, syllables per line, rhyme scheme etc. Writing in free verse is like walking in the woods, feeling the grounds, smelling the wildflowers, touching the waters of a brook. Writing in poetic forms is like walking on a road or driving a car on a highway where traffic rules are to be followed. I decide a poetic form first, then write in that poetic form. The Rise Insight: Some of your poems are open-ended, while others are more reflective or opinionated. How do you balance these different styles in your collection? Author Rupali: It is not intentional. Some poems take the course of being open-ended, while some sound reflective and opinionated. I don’t try to change the shape, the poem is taking while I am writing the first draft of the poem. The Rise Insight: You have included sketches along with your poems. How do your illustrations complement your poetry and what role does visual art play in your creative process? Author Rupali: Sometimes, my sketches inspire poetry, sometimes poetry inspires sketches. At times, I have written poems separately, independent of sketches and sketches were drawn by me independently, but they complemented well. So, in the beginning of every section, I have selected a sketch, which would suit the theme of the section. The visual arts like photos, sketches, paintings – all of them have inspired me to write poems. I enjoy writing poems by observing the artwork, various elements and the symbolism. I think wishes are very powerful. I had tried my hand at writing a novella in Telugu language as a 14 year old girl. I dreamed of becoming a published book author since then, and it drove me towards fulfilling that wish after half a century from the time that teenage girl dreamt about it. This was the germination of the seed for writing the book on this particular theme. The Rise Insight: The text mentions how life often has different plans for us, sometimes leading to unexpected opportunities or introductions to new people. How did you incorporate this idea into the narratives of your book, and what message do you hope readers will take away from it? There are times, when our wishes or goals do not go as per our plan in life, for whatever reasons. If we look close enough, there could be an alternate path to achieving that wish or desire. Many a time, things that don’t go as per plan are more formative than the things that do. We tend to become inventive in the face of adversity. We discover that if we can’t go through, maybe we can go around or hop over. That’s why having a plan B helps. In the concluding story of the book, this is what the protagonist tries to highlight. As his life story reveals, even after the most devastating of events, it is possible to grow by finding deeper meaning and purpose in life. In his case, the plan B turned out to be an equally fulfilling and satisfying path to take. Like the book Option B of Sheryl Sandberg emphasizes, resilience comes from deep within us and from support outside us. I think many of the messages of the book, such as building resilience in the face of adversity, having hope even when there doesn’t seem to be any, building meaningful relationships with family members, using stories to connect with people across generations are some of the take away messages that I hope the readers get from the book. Could you elaborate on how you developed this technique and its significance in conveying the themes of hope, determination, and wish fulfilment to your readers? My first book was an anthology of short stories titled ‘In the Company of Stories’. So I was toying with the idea of doing something different with this book. During one of my discussions with my daughter, this particular format of creating a universe of different stories within an overarching single theme took shape, and she encouraged me to pursue it. I think its significance lies in conveying the theme that stories can be powerful tools in driving people towards transformative change. The Rise Insight: “I Wish & I Will” explores themes of strength and adversity, particularly in relation to the transformative power of wishes. Can you discuss how you portrayed these themes through the characters’ experiences, particularly in the face of challenges like death and hardship? I believe adversities, more than the advantages, shape us into who we are. However, we human beings tend to view death as a very scary topic, though it is as real and final as birth is. We often tend to conveniently forget the fact that we are mortal. We avoid talking about death and hence acceptance of it becomes extremely difficult, especially for adolescents. In this book, the topic of death is dealt with in many stories, albeit in different contexts, so that it helps the readers to view it as a natural process. It was the part of the design I was working with for the book, perhaps at the risk of putting off a certain category of people, by dealing with the subject so openly and so frequently. The Rise Insight: Empathy and resilience are central to the storytelling in your book. How did you approach infusing empathy into your characters’ journeys, and what role do you believe empathy plays in connecting readers to the narrative? I think I have been fortunate in life to have been exposed to varied experiences and diverse groups of people, which enabled me to handle the characters in my book with greater empathy. Balendu Dwivedi: The story of the novel Madaripur Junction is totally based on rural politics in North India.It is a satire. This novel enjoys itself pinching the backside of the self-appointed religious-caste representatives as it flows boisterously through the by-lanes of rural India. A village in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Madaripur Junction, is the center of the novel’s plot. It is the playground for rogue characters and where various kinds of burlesque meet. In this respect, Madaripur Junction is largely a junction of various social anomalies and bizarreness. Chhedi Babu and Bairagi represent the so-called upper castes in Madaripur, along with many companions who accompany them like shadows. All these characters not only are present in their completeness of naked display of the lowness of their beings but also are found laughing aloud shamelessly at their deception, trickery, deceit, and double-dealings. Balendu Dwivedi: The young generation has a lot of energy for writing, but they need more experience because most of them have never struggled. Experience comes from their struggles in life, so it is necessary for all new writers to get experience through struggle if they want to write realistic literature. The Rise Insight: How was the interaction with Nasreen, and does she inspire you in any way? Balendu Dwivedi: Renowned writer Taslims Nasreen inaugurated my book at the Indore Literature Festival. We met at the festival, and I gave him my novel and discussed its content. She was so impressed that she said she would be happy to inaugurate the novel Madaripur Junction. Then she asked for the organizers for it. That day was a massive incident for me because, from the beginning of my writing, when I was studying at Allahabad University, his novel ‘Lazza’ was published.
